De tekst van de Amsterdamse kunstenaar Raul Balai kan niet over het hoofd worden gezien. In totaal 53 letters langs het kanaal tussen het stadskantoor en het gebouw van het waterschap. Elke letter drie meter hoog. De letters vormen een zin: ‘HOW OUR EXPLOITATIVE STATE OF MIND FRAMES THE SHAPE OF THE WORLD’ – ‘Hoe de mentaliteit van exploitatie de bril is waardoor we de wereld bekijken’.

De kunstenaar heeft zijn letters bewust voor het stadskantoor geplaatst: ,,Hier speelt vooral prestige. Het systeem van uitbuiting zie je hier weerspiegeld. Het kanaal als verbinding met de andere kant van de wereld verwijst naar kolonialisme. Mijn werk raakt vaak aan dat thema. Maar ik wil uitbuiting niet alleen daaraan koppelen. De twee archetypen van de Nederlandse samenleving zijn de koopman en de dominee: de koopman wint altijd, helaas. We moeten toe naar een systeem waarin geld niet boven mensen gaat.”

The text by Amsterdam based artist Raul Balai cannot be overlooked. A total of 53 letters along the canal in front of the municipal office and the water board building. Each letter three metres high. the letters form a sentence: ‘HOW OUR EXPLOITATIVE STATE OF MIND FRAMES THE SHAPE OF THE WORLD’.

The artist has deliberately placed his letters in front of the two offices: ‘Here, it is all about prestige. You can see the system of exploitation being reflected. The canal as a connection to the other side of the world refers to colonialism. My work often touches on that theme. But I don’t want to link exploitation only to that. There are two archetypes in Dutch society: the merchant and the minister. The merchant always wins, unfortunately. We must move towards a system in which money isn’t being put over people.’
